I don't think I mentioned my latest book purchase from The Book Depository. Half the order arrived today - Italy: instructions for use, by Nan McElroy.
It's a little pocket-sized book with lots of practical info like how to use the ticket machines at the railway station, how to negotiate various types of shops, the Italian post office and ATMs, and recognising road signs if you're driving. And it has the relevant vocabulary and a basic pronunciation guide to get you through. It doesn't tell you about history and where to stay or where to eat, so it's nice and compact to carry with you as a reference on your travels.
