changing my surroundings

I work from home. I don't have a separate office - I'm set up in what we refer to as the 'computer room', which contains desks for both the husband and myself (and our desktop and laptop computers, plus a server, a couple of printers and other paraphernalia.

It also contains two large bookcases, crammed full of work samples, general books (mainly reference books), photo albums, and a stack of CDs for the kids' computers (that's just my bookcase - the husband's has his technical car manuals, magazines and more).

There's also a digital piano, my sewing/craft desk (which is gradually coming to light after being stacked high with 'stuff' for a long time), a cabinet full of software and tax files, and my new-ish shelving unit (all on my side), plus the husband's electronics desk, a c.1980s drinks cabinet/display unit, a vinyl cutting machine, a small bookshelf and a filing cabinet (on his side). And stuff in boxes that I have yet to sort (the theory is that it will be sorted into boxes and stored on the shelving unit. There's also a gas heater that we don't use and which will eventually be removed, but it will cost several hundred dollars to have the gas disconnected and we have other priorities at the moment.

It's far from an ideal set-up, and one that's not working very efficiently. So I need to change it.

I spend a LOT of time at my desk. Some of that is work, some is research on various subjects, some is social interaction, some is just messing around on the internet. But to be honest, it's not a very inspiring space to spend all that time, so I'm going to take some photos of 'now' (which is vastly improved on what it was thanks to a gorgeous friend who comes around every so often and works with us to declutter and sort), and work on one small section at a time until it's all fabulous.

I'll post photos tomorrow, and get started on Part 1 - my desk, which was under control for a while but has built up a layer of detritus again.
