Miss Tizz learns some French at school (there have been issues with securing teachers, but there's a part-time teacher who, although not a trained French teacher, is from Europe and speaks French fluently who is working with the younger children at the moment, and hopefully we'll have a 'proper' French teacher next year). I learnt a little French in Year 7 & 8 at high school, which is *ahem* about 30 years ago. I am quite interested in how English words are often derived from other languages, but deciphering clues based on a written passage is VERY different to understanding a spoken language.
So ... I'm planning on doing some beginner language courses. If I get through those successfully, I may look into further language study, with the aim of passing on anything I learn to Miss Tizz.
I need to do some research to see what courses are available, but coincidentally I received a brochure in the mail today from our local Institute of Technology, which offers short adult community education courses. On page 42: "Languages for Tourists", including French and Italian. At $145 for 12 hours (over 6 weeks) it might be a good place to start ...
Alternatively, if anyone happens by here and has some experience with learning languages via CD or the internet, I'd love to hear about your experience.
